THE CAPTAIN'S PLAYBOOK / 02

Methodology

Discover the flight-deck thinking behind consistent work, better teamwork and disciplined judgement.

BUSINESS DNA / MISSION / VISION

The mission comes first.

“A captain doesn't need everyone to think alike. A captain needs everyone working towards the same mission.”Mark Barclay

Clear priorities. Shared direction.

From his aviation experience, Mark describes a captain's operational priorities as (1) Safety, (2) Commercial integrity. Everyone understands that safety comes first. For a business, he describes an operating focus of (1) Mission, (2) Vision: the mission is what the business exists to deliver now; the vision is where it aims to go. Mission grounds decisions; vision sets long-term direction.

These are not exact equivalents: safety and commercial integrity are operational priorities; mission and vision express purpose and direction. A business mission never overrides safety, legal or ethical obligations.

SOPs and teamwork are not generic compliance paperwork. Every part of the Playbook is deliberately designed around that company's Business DNA, mission, values and vision. CRM gets people working together; SOPs support reliable execution; abnormal and emergency procedures protect essentials; D.O.D.A.R. supports sound decisions when there is no checklist—all directed at the shared mission.

The tailored Company Operations Manual, planned Operations Captain and six-monthly readiness refreshers carry that same approved context into everyday work. The detailed consulting implementation remains bespoke, not a DIY template.

02 / THE METHODOLOGY

What aviation learned about working together.

The Captain's Playbook applies established flight-deck principles to the realities of business. Clear procedures support normal operations; CRM strengthens how people work together; structured decision-making helps when the checklist ends.

A FRAMEWORK FOR THE UNEXPECTED

When there isn't a checklist.

D.O.D.A.R. helps a team diagnose the situation, consider options, make a decision, assign actions and review what happens next. It supports judgement; it never replaces approved emergency actions or the responsible decision-maker.

01 / DIAGNOSEWhat is actually happening?

Establish the facts, immediate risks and what is still uncertain.

EXAMPLE: Which customer services are affected by the outage?
MORE THAN A MANUAL

A shared way of thinking and working.

The Captain's Playbook is the methodology: a combination of procedural discipline, teamwork and preparedness. The Company Operations Manual is the client-specific platform that puts those principles into everyday use. They are related, but they are not the same thing.

Procedures provide a dependable starting point.

Standard Operating Procedures establish how important recurring work should be done, who owns it and when to escalate. They should be clear enough to use and controlled enough to trust.

CRM is teamwork, not customer software.

Aviation Crew Resource Management brings the whole team into the picture: sharing what each person sees, communicating clearly, challenging constructively and anticipating the next need. A procedure is stronger when the people using it maintain collective situational awareness.

Prepare for departures from normal.

Approved abnormal and emergency procedures establish first actions and a responsible human lead. Where an existing checklist does not fit, D.O.D.A.R. provides a structure for judgement—not permission to disregard an approved emergency action or human accountability.
